Here is another great way you can support the Joana D. McKeoun Memorial Scholarship: A Pampered Chef Online Party! Here is how it works:
It's easy: Go to the link below, select "Shop Online" in the upper right hand corner, type "Scholarship Fundraiser" for the host and you are ready to shop to your heart's content. Joana's scholarship will receive 30% of all the sales! Tonya VanTol was kind enough to offer her entire commission for this sale - how incredibly awesome is that! Thank you!!!
This fundraiser will end on January 26, 2014, and your orders will be shipped directly to your house...anywhere in the U.S!
As always, please feel free to share this link.
Have fun shopping...and supporting this great cause! Joana's light will always shine!
The support we have received for this scholarship is absolutely amazing! Each time I receive an email stating that a donation was made, I picture Joana looking down on us with a great, big smile on her face! Thank you so, so much! We are almost half way to our goal!!
I have been speechless watching all the donations come in - it's been absolutely amazing! Thank you all so, so much for supporting the Joana D. McKeoun Memorial Scholarship! Without you, there would be no such thing!
Just a quick heads up...we have a date for our 5 k Run/Walk and 1 mile Fun Run/Walk. It will be held on June 14, 2014 in the morning, so save the date! More info will be coming as the planning gets more under way, but we already know that it will be a great event for an even greater cause...to keep Joana's legacy going and ensure that a scholarship in her honor and memory can be awarded every single year from here on out!
I am absolutely speechless and full of gratitude! In less than 12 hours, you have donated over $1000 to get Joana's scholarship off to an amazing start! My heart is full, and I can feel Joana's spirit in all of this. As I said before...Joana's light still shines, cancer could not snuff it out! Thank you all so very much!
I am going to change the goal to $10,000 ... because that's how much we actually need for the endowment fund to ensure that Joana's scholarship will go on indefinitely. We reached our initial mini-goal of $1000 much, much faster than I would have ever thought possible...and I feel confident that we can also reach this bigger goal, through online donations and fundraising events, such as our planned 5k.
Again, thank you all so very much for your donations and for sharing this page with your families and friends. Without you, there wouldn't be a Joana D. McKeoun Memorial Scholarship!
This is the little write up that will be printed in the program for the Saginaw Community Foundation's scholarship awards ceremony in May. I think it describes very well why we are doing this....to honor Joana's love for college and keep her legacy going!
"Life is too short to be anything but happy." Those words were not just spoken by Joana, she truly lived by them each and every day of her life.
Joana was born in 1992 in Bay City, MI. She moved to Saginaw in 2003 where she lived with her mom, stepdad, and three younger siblings and attended White Pine Middle School and Heritage High School.
In 2008, Joana was diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly before her 16th birthday. Two surgeries, two rounds of radiation therapy, and countless chemo treatments couldn't slow her down. Through it all, she continued to attend high school and later became a student at the University of Michigan, majoring in English. Besides school, she had many interests and was very involved in her community: She volunteered for Relay For Life as well as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, she was a cross country and track runner, she danced on the UofM's ballroom dance team, and she loved spending time with her family and friends.
Due to her tumor and treatments, Joana had many difficulties to overcome "“ poor vision and memory and cognitive impairment just to name a few. However, Joana never gave up and pursued her dream of attending the University of Michigan even though it was not easy for her. She worked extra hard and enjoyed every single day she was able to spend in Ann Arbor. She was a very caring and giving person, and she never complained about her situation "“ even when she relapsed twice during her college years.
On October 4, 2013, Joana lost her five year battle with brain cancer, nine days after her 21st birthday. Her bright smile and joyful personality will never be forgotten by those who knew her and her light will continue to shine. Joana's mother established this scholarship in honor and memory of her and to help local students get one step closer to achieving their dream of attending college "“ a dream Joana never abandoned and made a reality!
This is our kick-off fundraiser for the Joana D. McKeoun Memorial Scholarship fund!
To get things started and be able to award a scholarship this spring, we would like to raise $1000. In order to continue the legacy of Joana's scholarship indefinitely, we are setting up an endowment fund with the Saginaw Community Foundation so that eventually it will support itself without any further fundraising. However, in order to achieve this goal, there will be quite a bit of fundraising going on during the first couple of years.
Education was extremely important to Joana, and I know she would love the idea of helping a high school student get one step closer to achieving his/her dream of going to college! Please help us reach our goal by donating - no amount is too small! :)
