Light for Kinama School

Light for Kinama School

Help bring electricity to a school in an under-resourced region of rural Rwanda!

About Kinama School
Kinama School is located in Karongi District, Western Province, Rwanda. As Western Province has historically been underfunded, Karongi District is the third poorest district in Rwanda, and ranks 23rd of 30 districts in funds received for education from the national government. Kinama School teaches 1,696 primary and secondary school students, employing 39 teachers. As an under-resourced school, it lacks electricity and sufficient water. In 2010, the government promised to bring the region onto the electrical power grid, but it has not done so to date. The lack of electricity means that students cannot stay at school after dark to complete their studies, hindering their performance in national exams, and, consequently, their chances for university admissions, employment, and the economic development of their community. It also means that teachers cannot charge their phones or the school’s 3 laptops or printer, making it more difficult for them to access and disseminate resources for learning.

About Sylvere Mwizerwa
Sylvere grew up in Kinama Village and attended Kinama Primary School both before and after the 1994 genocide. Throughout his life, he has been passionate about doing good for both his country and his community. He has demonstrated this passion both by working for two social enterprises and by initiating projects to better the lives of students at Kinama school. His first project entailed organizing alumni to provide shoes to all students at Kinama school, so that students whose families could not afford shoes for children would not be stigmatized and then drop out of school. However, he recently realized that the shoe project would not be sufficient to bring about lasting change for the student body of Kinama school, and that their performance on the national exams and opportunities arising from those exams would only improve if students had light to study at night. It is for this reason that he has launched this initiative, to provide solar power to Kinama School.
