Nicaragua Service Trip

Hi everyone! I just wanted to share with all of you an exciting service opportunity that I have chosen to be a part of. This March 2014, I will be volunteering with a select number of
undergraduate students at Quinnipiac University, Hamden, CT. We will be traveling to
León, Nicaragua, as part of an Alternative Spring Break team. There we will be participating in numerous community development initiatives. Some of the projects over the years have included classroom and garden construction, first aid and CPR training, and the development of theatre workshops. As part of the Albert Schweitzer Institute, we will be partnering with Alianza Americana, a leadership and educational program focused on promoting change within the Nicaraguan community.
The Nicaraguan community has suffered many hardships such as war, economic crisis, and natural disaster. The average age is 21 years old and over 80% live on less than $2 a day. The average family earns just $910 annually, and 1/3 of the children never enroll in elementary school, do not attend, or drop out before reaching the sixth grade.
As a future educator, I find social justice to be a very important cause to work for and promote. I hope one day to share the amazing experiences that I have on this trip now only with all of you, but also with the students that I will one day teach and inspire to be advocates for a better local and global community! Please help me reach this goal by donating to my service trip. Any donation helps and is greatly appreciated! All donations I receive will go towards the cost of my trip (which includes, travel, food, and other miscellaneous fees for the trip.) Any extra funds raised will be allocated to buying gifts and supplies for the children and families that we will be helping and staying with while in León!
