Hi, we're two female debaters from a brand new school in Texas, one of which is Black and Navajo. After not getting off of the waitlist for the Harvard Tournament we were able to get into the Cal Invitational at UC Berkeley; this means we still need your help! We've spent all year consistently discussing Assata Shakur, Joy James and how they provide political and intellectual models for us to understand our positionality as black and white women in debate.
We would really like to attend this tournament because it is our last chance to get any sort of exposure and experience outside of the Texas area until the Tournament of Champions. Since we didn't get to travel nationally or even regionally until this year, these large tournaments are important for us to attend in order to gain experience on the national circuit. We've only been a school for 4 years and while we have managed to do a lot through hard work and dedication, our budget is virtually non-existent since it was only designed for local Austin tournament. Our families and our three coaches (two of whom are volunteers) have already made far too many sacrifices (like driving from Austin to Chicago) just to make last semester possible, but even that can only get us so far. If you have any ability to help, that would be great. We are so grateful for your help!
*Fund breakdown*
750 for plane tickets (250 a piece)
400 for the hotel for coach (130 a night)
Our parents and coach will find a way to pay public transportation and food either out of pocket or using his student loans.
**FYI** Any extra funds raised now will be used to help us travel to the Tournament of Champions in May
***UPDATE*** With Berkeley approaching we are only $300 away from securing our plane tickets!!! That means if 15 more people donate $20 you will be our heroine/hero. If we can get to the tournament you can bet that we will find SOMEWHERE to sleep whether its sharing rooms, floors, etc.
