Ms. Chen's 10th Grade Classroom

I am a first year teacher. This coming year, I will be teaching 10th grade English in Dallas ISD.

My school is located in a low-income neighborhood where many students work to help support their families. Many may be the first generation to go to college in their families should they choose that route.

My vision as a teacher is to create a classroom culture in which my students feel empowered to speak up and share their stories. I want them to know that their opinions, and they themselves, are valued. I want them to know that they aren't in the classroom just to pass a test or to listen to their teacher preach. They are here to receive an education that will positively influence their lives outside of the classroom and empower them in their everyday lives. In the process, I will encourage my students to think about what they want to do with their lives, and I will tailor my curriculum to help students achieve their goals.

To make this a vision a reality, there are many things that need to be done to prepare my classroom for my future students - especially as a first-year teacher in a low-income neighborhood. I can use all the help that I can get to welcome them to my class.

Most importantly, to build a classroom environment that fosters readers, I plan to purchase a classroom library of books that my students find relevant and relatable. I will build a curriculum around these books.

I also need to purchase class supplies:
- Classroom set of whiteboards and Expo markers
- Anchor chorts, index cards, post-it notes, and other paper supplies

As a first year teacher, I also need to start building my classroom from the bottom up, so I will be purchasing:
- Bulletin supplies (border trim, background, and decorative materials
- Organizational materials (storage units, binders, file supplies)
- Inspirational and ELAR-related posters to hang around the room

Thank you for reading this and for any contribution you can make. Every dollar helps, and I appreciate all the help that I can get. I will be sure to spend this money wisely.

Teaching is a rigorous profession but so very rewarding. I am so privileged to do the work that I do!
