Service Dog

I've been handicapped since birth, and I've always used a wheelchair. Up until about 2007, I always used a manual wheelchair. But age started catching up to me and I switched to an electric wheelchair. It's been difficult to bend down and get things off the floor, and as the years go on, it's been getting worse. Now for the last 2 years, I've dealt with a pressure ulcer, and even with having it repaired, it's even more difficult to bend down to reach things.

I've thought a lot about a service dog, but always put it off because I wanted to do as much for myself as possible. Well, it's getting to the point where I'm pretty sure I need the help that a service dog can offer.

Through a friend, I found out about an organization in Kansas that trains service dogs, and I'd really like to get one. The hard part is, it cost my friend at least $2500. It's going to cost me even more, since I don't drive any more. I know it's a lot to ask, but I'm going to have to find a way to get to Kansas eventually, to go through training with the dog. I don't know how I will do that yet, but I want to put some money away for that, too. I will probably have to rent a van and find someone to drive me down there, pay for gas, lodging and food.
