2014 Stikine Amphibian Research

We are seeking public contributions to support a third year of systematic amphibian monitoring on the Stikine River and its nearby islands. This work will allow managers and researchers to better understand species diversity, distribution, population fluctuations and the health of frogs and salamanders in the region. The work will take place in late May of 2014 when the river becomes accessible to boat traffic.
Why should we care about amphibians in Alaska? They are among the first species to be impacted by changes in their environment and they serve as indicators of biological health, offering early warning signs for problems that may impact other species on which people depend, such as salmon. Amphibians also consume large quantities of insects (who doesnt want to promote mosquito control?) and they are an important food source for birds, fish and small mammals in many areas.
Relatively little money is needed to support sampling efforts in the spring of 2014:
$300 to fuel the boat
$250 for a volunteer stipend
$150 for supplies (thermometers, scales, gloves, etc)
$150 for lodging (USFS cabins)
TOTAL GOAL: $850
Whether or not the goal is met, the work will take place. The $850 may be distributed differently than is listed in the above categories, depending on project needs, but receipts will be kept to verify that all monies were spent on the project. In the event that unforeseen circumstances prevent 2014 sampling, the money will be used for sampling in 2015. Any leftover funds will be applied to 2015 sampling as well. All contributions will be used for amphibian sampling on the Stikine no matter what!
