Thank you so much for your support of the Minor Threats Chess Club. Your donations have made a huge impact on these kids' lives. The kids learn so much about themselves and the world through chess. They experience so many "firsts" through chess. Without generous people like you this wouldn't be possible.
This year I'm trying to take about 15 kids to National Championships in Columbus, OH, Louisville, KY, and Nashville, TN.
I will be deleting this account after today. Please follow the link to our new donation page and again THANK YOU SO MUCH!
The Minor Threats Chess Club returned from the Elementary Nationals Chess Championships in Dallas, TX safe and sound. And again, the kids did not return the same of the when they left. Most of them had never flown before. None of them had ever been to Dallas before. They learned a lot. Not only about chess about also about themselves and the world.
I was so proud of the kids. Four of them had their best Nationals ever. Miles and Syair both scored 4.5/ 7 points. Morrisa my 3rd grader, who's only been playing chess for a few months, scored 2 points. Nifese tied for 16th place out of 371 players with 5.5 points.
Next year we are planning on attending States in Lancaster, PA in March, High School Nationals in Columbus, OH on April, 10th, Junior High Nationals in Louisville, KY on April 24th, and Elementary Nationals in Nashville, TN May 8th.
Without the generosity of people like you, these kids would not have opportunities like these. Thank you so much. You are helping make a difference in these amazing kids' lives.
The kids and I all returned safely from our 16 hour adventure home! They returned but they are not the same as when they left. They learned more about chess, the world, and themselves. They made me so proud. They were regularly playing 3 hour matches. 3 hours!
One of the most amazing stat I kept thinking about this weekend was this. There were only 34 kids from 11 different school from the whole state of PA at the tournament. I brought 10 kids from 5 different schools. We went to the tournament with our friends from the Paul Robson Chess Club. They brought 6 kids from Blankenburg Elementary. So between the two of us we brought almost half the kids from PA! Almost all of the kids from PA at the tournament were from the Philadelphia School, the most elite private school in the city, or Masterman, the most elite public school in the city.
Just getting the kids to the tournament and returning safely was a win. The kids worked so hard to get there and they worked so hard while they were there. These are the type of moments that change kids lives.
Thank you so much for your support! Up next, Elementary Nationals in Dallas.
Thank you for supporting the MTCC. This weekend we went to the PA State Scholastic Chess Championships in Carlisle, PA. I took 14 kids. Most of them competed Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They learned so much. They learned a lot about chess and they also learned important social skills and life lessons. Some of the new kids had never been outside of Philadelphia before.
We returned with 11 trophies! This was our best showing to date!
Now we're getting reading for Junior High Nationals (April 25th - 27th) in Atlanta, GA and (hopefully) Elementary Nationals (May 8th-10th).
Thank you so much for your support. The kids work incredibly hard but most of their families can't afford the full cost of these trips. They wouldn't be able to go with out help. So, thank you for the PMA. Thank you for helping to change the lives of these inner-city kids.
I'd just like to thank everyone for their generous donations and kind / inspirational comments. These kids work so hard and thanks to people like you they are going to get to travel and compete. These trips will be life changing for my kids. I don't know how you heard about us. So I don't know if you've seen this yet.
The Minor Threats Chess Club is made up kids ages 7 - 13 from inner city Philadelphia. The club practices and competes year round around Philadelphia.
Since the beginning of last school year the kids have played in 32 chess tournaments including the PA State Scholastic Chess Championships in Carlisle, PA and the SuperNationals V Chess Championships in Nashville, PA.
With your help they will be able to complete in the State Championships and two National Championships again this year.
We need approximately $2,500 to take 15 kids and 5 adults to the State Championships in Carlisle, PA for two nights in March. Last year I was able to take 10 kids and we came back with a total of 7 trophies.
We need approximately $7,500 to take 15 kids and 5 adults to the Junior High National Championships in Atlanta, GA for five nights in April and approximately $12,000 to take 12 kids and 4 adults to the Elementary National Championships in Dallas, TX in May. Last year I took 8 kids to SuperNationals. We won a team trophy and Tahvon won an individual trophy.
Your donation will make a
huge impact on the lives of inner-city youth who are eager to achieve great
things through chess. A $20 donation would pay for a
hotel room for one child. A $50 donation
would pay the Nationals tournament entry fee for one child. A $100 donation would cover one child's
expenses for the State Championships. A $200 donation would pay for one child's
bus ride to Atlanta. A $500 donation
would cover one child's expenses for one of the national tournaments.
