Hello, friends. Wanted to give a quick update to our campaign. While it was initially set up to help pay for advertising and other costs we are changing the purpose to pay for our filing fee for 501 (c) 3 status. This status will allow us to solicit funds from other non-profits and apply for a low-cost conservation loan program through another organization. The fee is $850, but once we get this status we will have access to a greater wealth of resources and help. Please consider giving if you haven't already.

Here's two photos that show exactly why we need to protect the Medina River. The top picture is riverside that has not been properly cared for. There are no canopy trees to keep the river cool and protect fish. Brush chokes out plants called "browse" that serve as food for deer and other animals. In the bottom picture Canopy trees protect and cool the water, decreasing evaporation. Though you can't see it in the picture the banks where they are flat are covered in browse and accessible to animals. We need more of the rivers in South Texas to look like the bottom picture. For ourselves, for the animals and for the Earth.

Eroded vs. Healthy Medina River

Our master plan involves teaching people about all aspects of Native life, from the foods they ate to the way that they conserved the landscape. In purchasing land along the Medina River we would be able to not only teach about the ways which Native people used rivers for sustenance, but also protect the waterways from pollution and habitat loss.

With the tremendous growth and development that is going on in South Texas it is becoming all the more important to preserve parts of the landscape for future generations.

I'm raising money to help build the Prickly Pear Living History Museum. This open-air museum will be dedicated to the history of Native Americans in Texas. Our dream location is pictured above: a beautiful spot on the Medina River in lovely San Antonio, Texas. At our site, visitors will be able to see the ways that various indigenous peoples of the region used and protected the landscape.

The money that I am raising now is not to buy the land to start the museum itself, but to prepare for a larger, multi-level fundraising campaign that will come in the early part of 2014. In order to get ready for that we need money to buy local advertising, Facebook ads, and to purchase items for events that will help us gain a larger fan base. When available, these items will be purchased through Native companies.

If any money is collected beyond the goal it will all be directly funneled into the Prickly Pear Living History Museum Land Fund. Please help us conserve a small part of South Texas and educate the people of this great state about the rich Native past of the region. If you can't give us money please visit our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/PricklyPearLivingHistoryMuseum and give us a Like! It's almost as good as money.
