Volunteering in Mexico!

Donation protected
Hi everybody and thank you for visiting my page! I am going to Mexico in February 2014 for three months to do some volunteer work!

For the first six weeks I will be helping to look after children, adolescents and adults with physical and/or mental disabilities. This will involve aiding teachers, helping with daily operations and classroom maintenance and overseeing simple activities.
I will either be placed in a learning centre, where services are provided at no cost to families by the state education department and cater to the needs of low income families, or in a residential site which is a home to children who have been abandoned by their families because they lack the economic resources to care for them. The residential sites are mostly run by religious orders and are funded solely by donations.

For the second six weeks, I will be helping with Animal Care/Animal Rights involving looking after abandoned cats and dogs (as most of you will know I am a big animal lover!). Although the attitude towards providing proper care to domestic animals is slowly changing in Mexico, there is still a major problem with dogs and cats being abandoned on the street. The city of Merida, where I will be based, does not have the resources needed to take care of these animals and they are often euthanized as a result. In response, a number of non-profit organizations have taken over the responsibility and care for these animals with the ultimate goal of finding people to adopt them. I will be working alongside the limited staff to bathe, brush, train, walk, and play with the dogs and cats to prepare them for adoption, as well as cleaning cages and providing maintenance to their facilities. A vital part of the work of these organisations is public education and fundraising. The organisations also provide free or low-cost mass spay-neuter clinics periodically throughout the year which I will hopefully get chance to help with as well as participating in large-scale fundraising events.

I am taking unpaid leave from work and the trip is also quite expensive, even though it's voluntary, it is costing me to do it, so if you could spare even a pound or two, it would be a massive help and I would be eternally grateful!!

Thank you :)
