Thank you for visiting this page! This October, I will travel to The Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA) in New Smyrna Beach, FL, to attend my very first poetry residency. The ACA has generously provided me with partial funding, but in order to cover the full cost and additional expenses, I need your help to raise $1,000 by September 30, 2013.
What does this residency mean to me?
I was selected as one of eight writers who will spend three weeks in residency with the amazing Mark Doty this fall. As an emerging poet with just a few published pieces and a dream to attend graduate school for an MFA in Poetry in 2014, this is a big honor (I must admit, there was excessive squealing happening when I opened the acceptance email).
Weekday workshops with Mark and the other artists will expose me to new readings and perspectives, enrich my craft, and challenge me to take poetic risks in my work; outside of these sessions, I will have ample time and space to create, research, and polish new and existing pieces. I am currently working on a project called Connective Tissue, a collection of poems and lyric essays that explore the physical, emotional, and relational impact of a genetic condition that affects the amount of collagen in my body. The project has been in the works for nearly two years, and I am now ready to gather the raw material and in-progress elements into a larger, more polished whole. Three weeks of focused work at the ACA, in the company of other talented creative folks, will help me make significant progress on this collection and move it towards publication.
How much does this cost, and what is the money for?
$550 (coversACA Fees, after the $350 in funding they've offered me, including weekday meals, housing, and administrative fees)
+ $250 (covers travel costs, including gas and meals for a 2-day drive each way)
+ $200 (covers food, including weekend/additional meals)
= $1,000 in donations from friends, family, and supporters like you
