Granite Mountain Kids Retreat

Mission: to provide comprehensive support through a retreat to the grieving children and families impacted by the loss of the Granite Mountain Hot Shots that died in the Yarnell, AZ fire on June 30.

Vision and Services: The Granite Mountain Kids Retreat is looking to provide a four day weekend getaway to the children impacted by the loss of the Granite Mountain Hot Shots that perished. These children and families have experienced a deep trauma from the loss of their parent. They are now faced with the challenge putting back the pieces of their lives as they reach the culmination of ceremonies, memorials, and funerals in honor of their fathers. These children will begin the road to recovery from their grief and now is when our community can surround them with support and love. The idea of of putting this on retreat for the children impacted by this loss is to ensure that the families and individuals are not forgotten and ensure an ongoing system of care prevails in providing hope, healing, and a safe space to process grief in the midst this great loss.

We want the services for the children to be fun, relaxing and entertaining. On top of that I want to bring in my professional training as a resource to the children and mothers participating in order to provide them a framework for grief and loss through out this process. Great care and careful planning is imperative for this goal.

We are looking towards having the retreat take place in Palm Springs, California given the interest of the families that want to participate in the retreat. The families that have expressed interest in participating feel more at ease on having their children drive versus having the children fly. The children are also very young and at this time it is considered best that the retreat be in a location where the families do not need to travel great distances.

Why Am I Doing This?
My motivation for the Granite Mountain Kids Retreat comes from my story of dealing with my own grief and loss from the death of my mother. I was encouraged by someone I deeply respect and love that maybe by sharing a portion of my story I help clarify for friends and family considering their own participation in this cause.

My mother is the reason why I want to do this. She represents all that I knew to be courageous, just, and good in the world. I know I can't compare my loss in this time to what each of the families are experiencing over losing fathers and husbands, but I you to know that if were my mom were around she want me to do something to support these families in this difficult time because that's what she would do. I want to honor my mom's legacy by taking action for good. Please help me extend her love and she would want to love and support these children and their mothers during this time of great need.

I deeply believe in the power of family and the love that parents show to their children. My mother was an exemplary model for loving her children, family, and loving those in need.
