HATS FOR CANCER PATIENTS

Donation protected
I would be grateful if you shared this page with others!

When my husband was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer 2 years ago, I thought my world had ended. To calm my nerves and keep my hands busy during long hours of radiation and chemo, I taught myself to crochet by watching youtube videos. It started with me making "cancer-eating-monster" hats for Jerry.
I now make hats, scarves and blankets that are donated to our infusion center and radiation hospital. I wanted to do hats that were a little..."more"... than the average "chemo cap". I try to keep them fun, stylish and versatile. Many of the styles I've designed can be worn in many ways ranging from "topping the dome" to full coverage.
Some scarves from 2012:

When Jerry was diagnosed we had just bought a little piece of land in a... more economical... state and planned to retire. We planned to sell our house here and hoped to have enough to build a little house with no mortgage. That dream still exists, but is getting a little dim.

The cancer has taken a physical, financial and emotional toll on us both. Jerry is a fighter though. He served our country in the U.S. Navy for 30 years. He is a double amputee, disabled vet, but at 72, still goes to work when he can. Meanwhile we have spent the last 6 years trying to punish an unethical doctor who harmed hundreds of patients by allowing unlicensed staff members to perform surgery on unsuspecting patients, myself included. The damage done to me and countless others and the fight for justice has drained much of our savings.

So far, I have still been able to fund my hat, blanket and scarf materials out of our pockets, but it is becoming harder to do. Winter is coming and I will be making blankets and scarves again. Somewhere between all this craziness we are still hoping to get to TN, where I want to continue donating to our research foundation, infusion and radiation centers here, but will want to donate to those in our new home state who will continue my husband's life-long treatment needs.

I'm also willing to accept donations of yarn, fleece fabric and buttons! Help us make cancer patients feel a little love and warmth! I'd love to offer reward levels, but I'm not sure I have the time or strength to add another job to my list right now.
