Trans* people in Quebec need your help!

Please contribute if you can.

If you are into that sort of thing, you can actually read the lawsuit itself, but quick version, we are challenging the following legal restrictions:

- the inability to change your name or sex on your Quebec identity papers if you are not a Canadian citizen

- people under 18 years old cannot change their sex on their Quebec identity papers

- inability to apply for a change of name yourself personally if you are under 18 years old

- people still cannot change their sex in Quebec unless they can prove that they have undergone surgery on their sexual organs (generally, hysterectomy or vaginoplasty) and take hormone therapy. Proof of chest surgery is also sometimes requested for people seeking to change their sex to male. These legal requirements were changed in 2013 but the new law is still not in force so for now these requirements still stand.

- impossibility of changing your papers so that a sex designation is not listed.

- inability to obtain a birth certificate that does not list a sex designation of male or female.

- it is not possible to change how a parent is listed on a birth certificate. Right now the parental category (mother or father) must match the legal sex of the parent at the time of the child's birth and can never be changed.

- Parents must chose to be a "mother" or a "father". The parental designation of "parent" is not an option.

We want to change all of this, and need your support to do so! Your donation will fund the court case.

It's important to note that this structural discrimination takes place in a province whose government still funds and promotes a gender clinic that provides therapy very similar to the "conversion therapy" offered by radical groups.

We do have a lawyer who has volunteered to take our case pro bono but we will still have to pay for administrative fees.

We sincerely appreciate any and all donations you can make! By helping fund this case we can work toward a world where everyone's gender identity will be respected and trans* people won't have to live in fear and humiliation.

You'll be helping to change people's lives in a very direct way!

1Trans* written with an asterisk indicates a broad conception of trans-ness. It is not limited to transsexuals or transgender persons, but also includes everyone whose gender identity does not match the one assigned at birth.
