My Husband and I are Urban Gardeners. We've recently moved from
Washington, DC to a small city in Central Virginia. We fell in love with
our home at-first-sight not because of the size or the rooms, but
because of the yard space. We immediately thought "Garden"!
So we started to garden. We turned over soil with a shovel and planted
seeds. We watered and tended. All while listening to our 13-year-old and
his friends try to figure out what kinds of jobs they could get over
the summer. You see, they like Laser Tag and burgers.
I've offered the 3 boys an opportunity to garden with me for minimum
wage and at first they thought I was kidding until they donned the extra
gloves to sift out rocks, sprinkle epsom salt, or turn over compost.
They earned that $15...2 hours of work. And I paid it out of my own
pocket. They liked the work and liked even more the idea of being able
to bring fresh fruits and veggies home at harvest.
So, I thought to myself, "Self...how can we raise enough money to
provide these young men with a steady income without having to pay money
we don't necessarily have to spend? How can we share with these young
men the importance of growing their own food and taking pride in what
they put in their bodies?"
So I turn to you all, My Potential Donors, for help. I would like to
hire the 3 young men (all 13-years-old) for 2 hours a day, 5 days a week
at $7.50 per hour. For 6 weeks (most of their Summer Break). This will
come to a total of $1350!
