Think back to when you were a kid. For some of us it could have been as little as 15 years ago, for some, quite a bit longer, but most of us had safe, happy, if not idyllic childhoods. Some of us went to music class after school, or gymnastics, or played on the basketball team. Some of us came home to Mom or Dad, a snack and help with homework.
Many children in the Bronx will NOT have these memories to look back on, unless you help.
The University of the Streets is a non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to providing opportunities, guidance, direction and innovative programs and initiatives that nurture the talents of individuals and emerging artists to help them meet their educational, vocational, career and other personal goals and aspirations.
Located in the Bronx, at 2381 Belmont Avenue after 46 years on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, The University of the Streets (UOTS) was incorporated in 1969 as a non-profit educational organization, spearheaded by the late Muhammad Salahuddeen, and presently led by Executive Director Saadia Salahuddeen.
The Youth Encouragement Society (Y.E.S.) is a new program launched by UOTS that has been designed as an outgrowth of UOTS’s rich history of community service in the educational/cultural, and philanthropy arena. It seeks to provide alternatives to inner city, and/or under-served youth, ages 8-19 years old, from increasing high school dropout rates, drug abuse, gang violence and other detrimental behaviors and activities that plague urban society and communities.
Y.E.S. will offer a number of extracurricular activities and arts program designed for the current mind state of today’s youth. We wish to expose our community members to hidden talents and living skills that will help become productive citizens of our future, one by one.
THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN. Each 10 week semester costs $100 per child and many of our kid’s families simply cannot afford this. We are asking YOU to sponsor a child to enable those less fortunate to have the benefit of an experience that will most certainly enrich their lives.
