My First National Conference!

Researching the history of medicine is my art. It is my craft. It is what I pour my heart and soul into to discover, compile and present to the world. It is my joy and I do it as an independent scholar. If you would like to see a sampling of my research, feel free to see my website: http://www.forgotten-novella.webs.com/, which was created when I published my first book: Forgotten.

Independent scholarship is research that is funded by the people doing it, not by an outside source. I am an independent scholar and have been funding my own history of medicine research for many years. In the past three years, I have been asked to present my research to several not-for-profit, professional, and educational associations, including Temple University and Thomas Jefferson University. Most recently, I have been asked to sit on a panel at the South Atlantic Modern Language Association (SAMLA) to speak on my perception and experiences of independent scholarship in academia.

My specific focus at this panel is to speak on the under-credentialed - those who the drive and knowledge, who have been able to exist on the fringes of academia - or even enter into academia -without a higher degree. As for myself, I only have an Associates of Science in Paralegal Studies and am obtaining a second one in Liberal Arts. Therefore, I know this perspective well.

I will also be speaking at a 2nd panel at SAMLA! This one is research based and explains early literary descriptions of vampirism (1790-1820) through the perception of medical theory and practice of the time.

I have willingly accepted. However, due to the economy, SAMLA cannot afford to assist with travel or lodging costs. Therefore, I am reaching out here.

Here is the cost structure:

Conference Registration: $75
Hotel (2 nights): $265 (includes taxes)
Roundtrip Airfare to Atlanta: $260(includes taxes)
Parking: $60
Total: $660

As I pay for it, the cost that I need to raise here will decrease. But, I cannot do this alone. Please help!
