Project Walk and Talk is excited to be implementing “Little Free Pantries” in the Cedar Valley. This project is designed to address the challenge of food insecurity in Northeast Iowa as well as promoting a program of community engagement.
“Little Free Pantries”are small and will augment the food disparity in Northeast Iowa and bring awareness the issue of food insecurity while at the same time promoting community togetherness.
Little Free Pantry will facilitate neighbors helping neighbors, building community.
Who benefits from the Little Free Pantry?
The LFP is for neighbors helping neighbors. In high poverty areas, the LFP is most often for those who are not easily able to meet everyday food and personal needs. In middle class neighborhoods, the LFP might stock after-school snacks for neighborhood children and/or youth.
How does the Little Free Pantry differ from other food pantries?
The LFP is small, so it does not stock the quantity and variety other food pantries can supply. For this reason, LFP should not be relied on for meeting long term pervasive needs.
Nearly all food pantries require application before use and have set hours of operation. Anyone may access the LFP at any time.
Food pantries operate as service providers, those who use them as clients. The LFP dissolves that professional boundary. Whether stocking or taking stock, everyone approaches the LFP the same way, mediating the stigma that often accompanies the need for food.
Food pantries are critical in addressing food insecurity. But some types of food pantries do not meet short term or immediate need,falling through the cracks. LFP provides a short term safety net.
The LFP is a proving ground, testing concepts like community, charity, justice, and sharing economy.
