We are 4 Global Social and Sustainable Enterprise MBA students from Colorado State University: Carl Husen, Fer Mijangos, Eric Cooley and Ana Gonzalez. We are working with a non-profit organization, AMURT, located in Haiti, and developing a social entrepreneurship project in the community of Anse Rouge.
We are trying to help Haitian salt harvesters form cooperatives and adopt modernized salt production methods that yield more and better quality salt and have the potential to increase incomes for farmers and laborers. The project has 2 components: establishment of the MSPC (Modernized Salt Production Cooperative) and the creation of a common ISS strategy for small producers and the MSPC to follow. The project has the potential to create value throughout the entire life cycle of the product, from improving lives of farmers and harvesters, to reducing costs of high quality salt and increasing access to iodized salt for consumers.
The Global Social and Sustainable Enterprise MBA team of students will be trusted with the mission of analyzing the potential buyers for the end salt product and determine which marketing approach will work best. As part of the tasks, the team will analyze the current salt distribution channels, to recommend improvements and will establish contact with the NGOs that might be interested in purchasing the locally produced high quality salt. We will test our assumptions and try to validate our business model.
The project has the potential to have a double competitive advantage based on differentiation, as it will produce high quality, local, sustainably harvested salt and on low costs when compared to imported salt, as transportation costs will be drastically reduced. The financial analysis backs up the venture's expectations as it projects the program to be sustainable and profitable and capable of offering competitive prices that will make it more attractive for potential customers.
