Help Chris coach the SA jnr team

When I found out on 12th July 2016 that I had been selected to coach the South African Junior surfing team I was super excited, and still am! For me it is an honour to be able to work with such a talented young team, as well as to get to represent my country for the first time.

Having first started coaching properly in the UK in 2005 it has become my biggest passion, from beginner surfers to the top surfers in the country. I love sharing surfing and helping people to achieve their best as well as giving back to a sport that has brought me so much enjoyment in the last 23 years of doing it. In 2011 I first coached the Western Province junior team with good friend Josh Salie, eventually winning that event and in doing so being the first WP team win in KZN waters. Since then I have coached the team another 4 times and the team has won twice more, those times in Jeffreys Bay.

Now what people don't know is that there isn't a lot of money in this sort of surf coaching, and in fact being the WP and SA team coach is not a paid position although expenses usually get covered. This never deterred me. I first applied to coach the SA Junior team several years ago but unfortunately didn't get the position, and with how things were it seemed unlikely that I would get a chance to pursue my dream to coach the SA Junior team at the World Championships.

So, when I refreshed my e-mail for the 50th time on Tuesday and saw that I was appointed coach I was super stoked! Unfortunately however, the management team were going to have to pay for themselves this year due to a lack of funding. With the ISA World Championships taking place in the Azores 17 - 25 September 2016 and of course having to travel earlier this didn't leave much time to raise the R35 000 needed, and unfortunately I don't have it stashed under my pillow either!

I am happy to give my time both for the training camp we will do and for the event, thankfully being granted leave from the company I work for, but the R35000 covers expenses such as flights (R18000 ouch) as well as accommodation, resgistration fees, rental vehicles etc; each team member is paying the same amount. Due to management having to pay for themselves there is only one coach (me) and a manager, Karen Elkington.

I am not used to and to be completely honest really don't like asking for things, especially not for nothing in return! But I can promise I'll put my all into it and do my best to support the team to achieve their dreams of being a World Junior Champion, both as a team and as individuals. So if you can help in any small way I would massively appreciate it! Really it can be any amount, every bit will help, I dont want people to put themselves out at all for this.

Thank you all in advance for either supporting if you have the means, or sharing with others who may.

Yours in surfing,
Chris Bond
