Spooky the Cat's Cancer Treatment

Donation protected

My cat Spooky has gone through numerous surgeries over the past year to remove his teeth as a result of reabsorptive lesions. He was in a great deal of pain and the removal seemed to help. Recently, Spooky began to eat less which was a red flag as he is usually quite eager to do so. He hadn't had a bowel movement in several days so I took him to the vet. Upon examination, it was noted that Spooky has a red sore in the front of his mouth on the lower left aspect of his jaw. It was decided to do a biopsy as this was a spot where the doctor had removed a tooth in July 2012 and he was unsure why it hadn't healed or presented itself prior to this examination. The doctor cauterized the area in an attempt to "zap" any tissue that may be afflicted with the unknown pathogen. When the biopsy results were returned, it wasn't positive news- it was confirmed that it was squamous cell carcinoma- one of the most common and difficult to treat feline oral cancers. Surprising, as Spooky is not even 10 years old and this is a cancer that typically afflicts older cats of 12.5 or more years.

All of this has transpired rather quickly- I am still stunned by the results. No one in this situation is prepared to make decisions for someone they love. I don't know what will happen-I'd like to proceed with radiation if the cancer isn't too progressed. First, we will have to get results from a CT or CAT scan. I'm not prepared to say goodbye to my little friend yet- anything you can offer would help.
