Save the Samaritan!

The Good Samaritan House, the largest shelter for homeless women with children in the St Louis Metro-East region announces a significant risk of closure after nearly 2 decades of continuous service to the community.

The Good Samaritan House, like many human service non-profits in IL, has been significantly impacted by the state’s lingering budget impasse and by an unexpected decision by the federal government to immediately reallocate federal funds to other programs.

The board has started the “Save the Samaritan” fundraising campaign which according to Mark Donavon, GSH Board President, “needs to raise $100,000 by August 31, 2016 in order to keep our shelter open through the end of the year and to give our board the time needed to adapt our revenue plan for next year and beyond.”

Why we need funds
The agency has been supporting itself without state funding for nearly a year.  Executive Director Janice Donaldson says, “This past year, we have continued to operate by “getting very skinny” while offering the same level of service to moms and their kids in need who are often the most vulnerable people in our communities.”  That is until recently, when the agency received the devastating news that their federal HUD grant would not be renewed.

Mark Donavon, says, “This very unexpected loss of HUD funding in April represents a 42% reduction in annual revenue, impacting our monthly income by nearly $13,000.  Without the immediate support and partnership of the St Louis community, we will be unable to remain open and continue to serve the needs of homeless women and children as we have done continuously since 1998.”  According to Janice Donaldson, “Our shelter program is extremely successful; 80% of the moms who complete our program, on average after 3 months, will leave us with a job, a home and the skills they need to end homelessness for their families.”

Overview of the Shelter
The Good Samaritan House, the largest shelter for homeless women with children in the St Louis Metro-East, is facing an imminent risk of closure due to delays and changes in  government grant money allocations.  As a result, they have had to shift their transitional housing program to other area agencies and have started an emergency fundraising campaign, “Save The Samaritan,” in order to ensure their shelter remains open; a program committed to ending homelessness for the 250 women and children who call the shelter home each year.
