The Students of Promise Program is a Closing the Achievement
Gap initiative in partnership with the San Francisco Unified School District
targeting underserved African American and Latino males. The program provides a student
advocate/mentor/life coach embedded in the school to empower targeted
students with life skills management, tutoring, academic support, mentoring,
behavior modification, social and emotional learning, exposure field trip
opportunities and more evidence-based strategies.
As we address the non-academic barriers to learning as a
tool to increase achievement, we are in need of your support to help make possible this school year’s Spring College and Cultural
Exposure tour to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Our goal is to raise $25,000 which will enable us to take 20 students and 6 chaperones on this historic
cultural exposure opportunity culminating with attending the prestigious Morehouse
College commencement ceremony in Atlanta, Ga. in which President Barack Obama will give the commencement address!
Our research and data shows it to be painfully evident that
many of our targeted students have yet to be exposed beyond their six-block
radius of awareness which places them at a great disadvantage and hampers their
ability to compete not only locally but on a global scale. Some have not even
seen the world renowned and phenomenal Golden Gate Bridge in the international City
of San Francisco. The success of our College and Cultural Exposure Tours not
only provides an early college experience, but social, cultural and academic
enrichment that motivates, inspires and leads to a greater sense of possibilities
beyond their often bleak surroundings.
College tours and exposure field trips have shown to introduce
and expand the realm of possibilities for our targeted students as well as
provide possible career opportunities, relevant and applicable learning
experiences, cultural awareness and linkage to resources outside of their
communities. We believe that your tax-deductible contribution of any amount, in collaboration with the San Francisco Students of Promise Program
efforts at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School is consistent with your concern, committement and interests in the pursuit of excellence of our most precious and valued assets.....our youth.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and support as we strive to not only close but eliminate the achievement gap! We can, We Will.
