fall I spent three months volunteering at an amazing orphanage in Ghana. In
June 2014, I plan to go back to that orphanage and spend another year
volunteering there. Achiase Children’s Home was opened by Mr. Sam and Mama
Sarah about 5 years ago after they
realized there was a large number of children in the town and surrounding area
that were not receiving the care or education that they deserve. They opened up
their own home and now care for about 40 children including 4 of their own. They also
opened a school next to the orphanage for the children at the orphanage as well
as about 100 other children from the surrounding area.
Mr. Sam and Mama Sarah receive
no financial assistance from the government and their only income is from
school tuition. Children that attend the school have to pay about 50 cents a
day and this also has to cover the cost of teacher salaries. The
income is not enough for them and they are often struggling to make ends meet
but they continue to have faith in God to provide. Mama Sarah and Mr. Sam do so
much and I want to do what I can to help them. While I am there I plan on helping them to run
the school, help Mama Sarah with preparing meals at the orphanage (they had to
let go of their cook because they could not afford to keep her on), take care
of any sick children which is a common occurrence there, help the children with their homework, tutor a special needs child from the orphanage, and just all around be
there for the children and show them how loved they are.
The biggest thing that I would like to do while there is lighten their financial burden. This
time when I go there, instead of going through an organization, I will be going
directly through the orphanage and will be staying there with the children and
eating the same food as them so that all of my money goes directly towards them.
It is my goal to raise enough money to be able to cover all of the costs of food for the orphanage for my whole stay there.
During my previous trip, they were struggling to make ends meet and had to skip a meal because they had no
money to purchase any food. The only reason they only had to miss one
meal was because of wonderful donations that helped to cover their food for the
next couple months. My goal is that for the whole year I am there, they never have to worry about how they are going to get food for their next
meal. The average cost of a meal to feed the whole orphanage is about $12.50 so my goal is to raise enough money to feed the whole orphanage, three meals a day, for 365 days. Any extra donations that I receive will go to cover extra costs at the orphanage such as medicine for sick children (Malaria is a very common disease there), water/electricity bills, new uniforms, or any other projects that might come up. If I could raise over $20,000 then I could even put some of the funds to helping some of my costs as I go on this journey.
Thank you so much for your consideration and support as I
prepare for my journey there to help the orphanage!
