Here’s the Problem:
50,000 low-income preschoolers in Alabama have no access to Pre-K. Unlike their middle-class classmates who have been taught the skills necessary to succeed, low income kids test almost TWO YEARS BEHIND their schoolmates, and often do not catch up. As a result, these children are much more likely to drop out of school before they turn 16; have a 50% chance of staying poor, and are 8X more likely to end up in jail or have an unwanted pregnancy.
Who We Are & How You Can Help:
To break this cycle of poverty, low-income families need support so that they can teach children the basic skills needed to perform well in school, and to establish a stable and positive family involvement. Children master grit and good work habits, vital to doing well, from their parents.
First Teachers@Home is an innovative family centered PreK program with exceptional outcomes that give low-income parents the tools they need to ensure that their children succeed in school and beyond. Established in 2001, First Teachers @ Home has helped over 4,000 children and their families in Alabama learn critical skills that has made a difference in how they have done in school and beyond. Working on a shoestring budget, FT@H has taught parents that they are key to their kids’ achievement.
First Teachers@ Home provides FREE classes and instructional materials that teach parents how to teach their kids (the participants commit to 5 lessons a week that they do with their 3 & 4 year olds at home for 15 minutes a day). By the program’s end, 82.3% of four-year olds tested kindergarten ready! Plus the parents acquire skills that continue to bring future rewards.
Now, First Teachers @ Home Desperately Needs YOUR HELP:
Our goal is to raise $300,000
Any contribution would be appreciated, but the more we collect, the more we can accomplish:
$100 provides a book for each of the 16 classes First Teachers @ Home gives to parents to read to their kids.
$500 defrays the cost of the materials First Teachers @ Home uses for a 16 week class. This includes school supplies as well as stuff these parents don’t often have like the ingredients to make a volcano.
$1,500 pays the total cost for one low-income family to take the entire First Teachers @ Home hourly class for 16 weeks.
$9,000 covers the cost for an entire First Teachers @ Home class, and can help change the landscape of poverty in an entire neighborhood!
