I've been doing a lot of "pre-work" for the writer's conference. I re-read two greats: The Great Gatsby and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...
I had a breakthrough about my Antagonist that I believe will do a lot to make the manuscript sell-able.... and I still have a lot more assignments to get through before going. I also need to re-tool the manuscript. Meaning, write. A lot. And delete. A lot. A minor character must be made major, and major characters will have to recede into the background.
Did I mention that I'll be spending four days with, among others, Pulitzer Prize winners Jane Smiley and Robert Olen Butler, along with highly-respected agents and editors? Very excited!
I've still got $1,200 to raise, so please forward to any like-minded friends/family, or hey, even enemies.
You will all be on my acknowledgement / thanks page when I get this puppy published. :)
I was one of 12 writers accepted to the Santa Barbara Author-Mentor Writer's Conference in February. Unfortunately I cannot afford the $3,800 price tag.
The reason I applied to this conference is that it is small, intimate, and attendees are able to spend a good deal of time, one-on-one, with a variety of people in the book world: Pulitzer Prize winning authors, notable agents, and editors.
I spent eight years writing my novel, The World is Bound by Secret Knots, and even managed to land a contract with a highly acclaimed literary agency in New York City. Alas, the book was never picked up for publication.
What I need is help with the overall structure of the manuscript, plot vs. story, so that I can get it as good as it possibly can be. I truly believe in this story, and I think with a little help, it will be published. This conference would go a long way in achieving that.
