This update is long overdue. So sorry for delay but God is good and He has been working things out for Jalil.
Jalil and the AIC students are bouncing back from the tragedy of a few weeks ago. The suicide of a young man with so much promise was a devastating turn of events. We thank and praise God for helping the students & faculty join together for support and healing.
Woo Hoo!!! Jalil has been accepted to the AIC Master of Business Administration Program. He is very happy and excited about this new challenge in his life. It will help focus his mind on the positive instead of that negative situation that's still out there.
Speaking of which - all is quiet right now - thanks to your support and donations, Jalil's attorney initial retainer fee has been paid in full. If the case continues to trial, we will have to pay an additional fee to keep him on the case.
We trust and pray all charges will be dismissed soon but until then donations are still welcomed and appreciated.
All monies will go to Jalil's future legal expenses.
**VERY SAD UPDATE ***
This morning I woke up to a phone call from Jalil with very sad news - one of the students at his school committed suicide last night.
Jalil is the Resident Assistant (RA) responsible for counseling parents and freshman students about life on campus. This was one of his kids and he is, once again, completely devastated. As is always the case when dealing with suicide, he blames himself.
Please pray for all of the parents, students and faculty of AIC. All classes have been cancelled and grief counselors are on campus to help deal with this shocking turn of events.
Have a prayerful day everyone:)
What a shame life can't be like a 60 minute episode of Law & Order. We found out today the process for getting all charges dismissed will take more time and effort than we realised.
Jalil's attorney is willing to work with us on payment of his fees because he believes in Jalil's innocence. However, we must show good faith by paying as much as we can as soon as we can. We really don't want to lose this attorney - he is the best and has been an absolute blessing to our family.
Please continue to pray for Jalil and donate what you can toward his legal expenses. God has brought us this far and He will see us through to the end.
Meanwhile, Jalil is back at school working hard and moving forward as usual. ***No Fear Just Faith***
Have a super blessed day everyone:)
Can you imagine spending 12 days in jail for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, finally being released, spending Thanksgiving with family and friends, returning to school and helping your rugby team win a championship?! Well, Praise God, that's the kind of young man I'm asking you to support. We were concerned about how JALIL would handle things after being locked up that long but he's a real winner who can't be held down.
Please donate what you can - we only need $3,061 to reach this week's goal of $7,500 and get those charges dismissed.
Thank you for your support and prayers. Have a super blessed day everyone:))
In the last action of the semester, the American International College men's rugby team won the plate trophy at the New York Sevens at Randall's Island. It was a cold and blustery day on the East River, but the guys overcame the elements and an early start to bring some hardware back to Springfield.
Roster: Anthony Aranda, Ben Roach (c), Corey Momsen, Gage Casey, Gavan D'Amore Morrison, JALIL OATES (below right), John Jackson, Josh Short, Josue Guerra, Michael Martinez, Mike Tupai, Sam Seumaala, Tyler Nawrocki, Wausa Onigbanjo
Thank you for donations made this weekend - we still need to raise $3121 to meet our goal of $7,500 this week. The lawyer will meet with Jalil when the retainer fee is paid so give what you can - every donation is a seed of hope sown into Jalil's future. Have a super blessed week everyone:))
***Just heard from Jalil***
His professors have "put me on my own clock to get
assignments done" which is a big relief - he was really worried about messing up his grades. He's sooo ready for these charges to be dismissed so he can really get on with his life. **No Fear Just Faith**
"Ž***GREAT NEWS *** Guess who played in the rugby tournament this afternoon and is now walking around with a trophy??!!! What can ya say - just can't keep a winner down:)) Congratulations Jalil!!!
Now if we can just get those charges dismissed. We still need to raise $3,321 to meet our weekend total of $7,500 for legal expenses - so please continue to give what you can.
*Go Team Jalil - No Fear Just Faith*
Our new goal is to raise ANOTHER $3,000 over the holiday weekend for a grand total of $7,500. Thanks for spreading the word about this page everyone - over 1,900 visits in just ten days. Keep up the good work Team Jalil. **No Fear Just Faith**
Some people have asked about sending personal checks. The Family would be happy to accept any form of donation. If you would like to donate via check, please contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org for more info.
***GOOD MORNING TEAM JALIL*** I hope your Thanksgiving Holiday has been super blessed in every way.
An overflow of family and friends showed up to welcome Jalil home - we were 25-30 strong and a good time was had by all. Jalil has been completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support.
Now it's back to raising money for Jalil's defense. Yes he is out of jail but the charges HAVE NOT been dropped. His lawyer was retained to file the very successful motion to get his bail reduced. Now we must pay him to defend Jalil against these ridiculous charges and have the case dismissed once and for all.
Hopefully you haven't spent all your Black Friday shopping money because we must raise at least $3,000 with the next 7 days:))
Anything you can contribute would be so greatly appreciated.
It gives me enormous pleasure to announce that JALIL IS NOW HOME with his family and friends. We thank and praise God from whom ALL blessings flow. We also thank his fantastic lawyer and everyone on *Team Jalil* who donated their time, letters of support, money and prayers.
He still faces serious charges, and we must continue to pay his attorney, so please keep the donations coming. Without your donations, none of this would be possible.
We believe more than ever that, in God's time, all charges will be dropped. Whom The Son Sets Free Is Free Indeed. Have a super blessed Thanksgiving everyone:)) *No Fear Just Faith* Luv you all!!
Thank you to everyone who participated in the letter writing campaign for Jalil. Because of your contribution, Jalil's attorney was able to send over 25 letters to the court and the prosecutor asking for the $1 Million bail to be reduced to a more reasonable amount. We still need to raise money to cover his bail and retain his attorney to work on the rest of this case so please don't stop giving now. Keep watching for updates - I may have more news later on today.
***UPDATE*** This morning Jalil appeared before Judge Robinson Gross to enter a plea of not guilty. He is charged with first degree crimes - the most serious.
His mother, LaToya, was there to show support as well as family members Tonette, LaKeisha, Shavell, Jabriel and Liliana. We did not have a chance to speak to Jalil but he looked okay - very concerned - as you can imagine. Some of the other kids arrested with Jalil were also in court.
Jalil's attorney informed the Judge he would be filing a motion to reduce the $1 Million bail. Judge Gross is a municipal court judge so she can't lower the bail - it has to be dealt with in a higher court - the Superior Court. The question is - exactly when the motion will be heard/decided - this is a holiday week plus most of the judges are away for their annual conference - leaving only two judges to hear emergency motions. Right now it's up in the air. We should know more by the end of the day.
Now we must focus on raising money to make sure we can cover his bail (when it has been reduced) so please keep spreading the word about donations.
Once again thanks to each and every member of #Team Jalil for your support - the Spirit is moving through all of us to get Jalil home for the holidays. **No Fear Just Faith**
***JALIL MAY BE IN COURT TODAY*** On my way to the courthouse now, check back later for an update. Have a super blessed day everyone:)
***A PRAYER FOR THE OTHERS ARRESTED IN THIS MATTER*** By the Power of the Holy Spirit in the Name of Jesus, I lift up each and every one that was arrested in this matter. Forgive me Lord for my focus has been on Jalil but this morning I woke up thinking about the others - what their families are going through and how they are handling this situation. I pray that Your Will be done in their lives, that their families have place their faith and trust in You, and that they are surrounded by as much love and support as our Jalil. In Jesus Name - Amen, Amen, Amen.
Jalil's cousin, Sharon Wooten, stopped by this afternoon with a $100 donation and these words of encouragement: "The Wooten Family loves Jalil. We know he will be home soon."
Jalil's great-aunt, Nadine Oates, also stopped by with another $100 donation and these words of encouragement. "We're all praying he'll be home for Thanksgiving. He better be I'm making his favorite - banana pudding. lol"
****Good Afternoon Team Jalil****
Aunt Keisha spoke to Jalil this morning. He's in good spirits - trying to make good use of his time. Even his cell mates can see his innocence - which gives us a glimpse of what's coming soon. No Fear Just Faith. Pray for light at the end of this tunnel. Have a super blessed weekend everyone:))
Thanks to your generous donations of money, time and prayers, we have now retained a very good certified criminal trial lawyer to handle Jalil's case. He will be meeting with Jalil on Monday. **No Fear, Just Faith** Have a super blessed weekend everyone:)
AIC President Maniaci's Response To My 11/12th Email Re Jalil's Arrest:
I have known Jalil since he came to AIC and I agree he is a good kid has worked hard and not gotten into trouble. I will forward this to our chief
of police at AIC.
***No Weapon ... It Won't Work***
Good Morning Team Jalil,
Woke up and the Spirit dropped this one on me:
Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:31-32
**No Fear Just Faith** Have a super blessed day everyone:))
Yesterday I spoke with attorney I really like for Jalil's case - meeting now scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. (setback/comeback, setback/comeback) No worries **Spirit is Moving**
Jalil In His Acting Debut - May 2012 - Such A Proud Moment!! *No Fear Just Faith*
"Who's on My Side" is the story of an 18-year-old boy, who has been mentally and physically abused by his alcoholic father. One of those actors may be Jalil Oates, an AIC student majoring in communications from Elizabeth, N.J., who appeared in the play based on the book. He said he was excited about appearing in the film. Good Morning Everyone - because of your generous contributions we can now hire an attorney to work on Jalil's case. Meetings this afternoon. Check back later for updates. *No Fear Just Faith*
Jalil's Aunt Keisha just sent me this text:
"No Fear Just Faith - I just had a visit today with my nephew and it was the worst experience ever. He is okay but not well. He wants me to tell the family, college mates, professors and everyone that believes in him that he is truly sorry - all he did was go to a house party.
His Aunt Shareen was also there with me - she stood in line at 5:30 a.m. to get the visitor's pass. She's keeping me from going insane.
I just want to say thank you and continue to pray for my family. My heart is broken."
****Thank You One And All****
The family would like to thank each and every one who has made a contribution at this time. We are truly overwhelmed by your generosity. We always knew Jalil is an extraordinary young man - what a testament to his character that so many have given so much in such a short time. Blessings upon Blessings upon Blessings to you all:))
FOR every SET back there's a MAJOR come BACK!!!! Jalil DID NOT appear in court today. The court docket is backed up and, at this point, he may appear on Friday, Monday or Wednesday of next week. But we know the devil is a liar and the **Spirit Is Moving. **
The good news is that the family will be able to visit tomorrow - some in the morning, some in the afternoon. PRAISE GOD!!!
The showing of family and friends was strong and united (special shout out to Dallas who came all the way from AIC) - we prayed, we cried, we even laughed together. Our battle cry is ***NO FEAR - JUST FAITH***.
Get that in your spirit and continue to pray, pray, pray:) Have a super blessed day everyone:))
***UPDATE*** Jalil was transferred to county jail tonight. HE WILL BE ARRAIGNED AT 8:30 TOMORROW MORNING. He was allowed to make a phone call and spoke with a family member - otherwise we would have never known he will be in court tomorrow. Thank you donations made and please continue to pray for Jalil.
Just received this email from Jalil's School:
Dear Ms. Thomas:
President Maniaci asked me to contact you relative to Jalil Oates problem. I am Chief of Campus Police and a practicing attorney. The AIC community would like to help Jalil. To that end please have Jalil's attorney contact me.
***Praise God - The Spirit Is Moving***
Just spoke with Union County Central Intake - Jalil will not be arraigned tomorrow (Wednesday). Now he has to wait until Friday to see the Judge.
Thank you for your donations Lita and Lazzet - luv ya:)
I am Jalil's cousin, Antoinette Thomas. On Friday, November 9th, Jalil attended a house party that turned into a violent robbery/drug raid. He is now sitting in a Union County jail cell, in total shock and disbelief, waiting to be arraigned on very serious charges. Right now his bail is $1 Million.
Jalil is a senior at American International College (Springfield, Massachusetts) - three weeks away from graduating with a degree in Communications. He's a good kid - never been in any kind of trouble. The calling on his life is to inspire and motivate young people.
Respected and well-loved, he comes from very humble beginnings - love, love, loves his family and friends. Shown above with his proud grandmother, Jalil WILL BE the first in his immediate family to graduate from college.
While we know, without a shadow of a doubt, Jalil was in the wrong place at the wrong time, it will take a good lawyer to argue his case before the court and prosecutors. We cannot, and will not, trust his case to a public defender. Too many innocent young men are wasting away behind bars right now because their public defender lawyer didn't have a clue.
We are asking you to donate whatever you can to help cover Jalil's legal expenses. The sooner he is exonerated and released from jail - the better. We will not allow this situation to ruin his super bright future. We trust and believe that God has an awesome Plan for his life.
JALIL DOES NOT BELONG IN JAIL.
God bless you, thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you in advance for your donation.
I will keep this page updated with any new information or developments.
