Like many places on the South Shore of Long Island, Freeport was hit badly, our location on S Bayview Ave in Freeport put us less than 3 houses from the beginning of the canals and 1 block from the bay. During the PM surge, which was 12 feet, our house was inundated with water. We took on over 4 feet of water inside the house and lost the entire lower level of rooms (Den, Laundry Room, Boiler Room, Office and Florida Room). The boiler and hot water heater we're destroyed, not to mention that the salt water got into the circuit box and electrical circuits and will likely mean that the house will require a rewire. The outside of the house was also damaged and will require new waterproofing, insulation and siding. On top of all this we also lost both of our cars to the storm. Overall we are looking at around $100K in damages.
We are now one of Long Island's many displaced families with no home to live in as Sandy has rendered our dream home completely uninhabitable. We really want to be able to celebrate Christmas in our home as we had so many plans that are now for naught. Any money donated will help us begin the massive amount of repairs whilst our insurance company figures out yet another creative way to get out of paying us. (Already we have been told that because is now not classified as a Hurricane that we do not qualify for the Hurricane Surge cover that was in our policy and as such do not have any form of flood insurance and are likely going to be faced with paying for everything ourselves. Please help us if you can to get started with our repairs and perhaps be back in for Christmas.
