"Help Emma Get A Lift" CONCERT FOR EMMA
A Fundraiser To Provide Access For Critically
Needed Medical Care

89 North, Patchogue, New York Sunday,
June 22, 2014 2 pm - 6 pm

Emma is a 7 year old young girl, inflicted with a very rare genetic disease known as ATR-X. She is attached to 4 types of life support systems. She is wheel chair bound and all machines need to be transported with her at all times. (The life support systems, wheel chair and Emma weigh in excess of 100 pounds.) At the present time Emma, by her mother alone or sometimes a nurse, need to unhook Emma from her life support, get her and her wheel chair apparatus in the van and Emma hooked back up to her life support. All within less than 2 minutes. Now you see why a new van with the appropriate lift and other handicap safety features needed are the subject of our fund raiser.

'My niece Emma is a beautiful 7 year old girl born with a rare medical condition. As she gets older I realize how incredibly difficult it is for her family to leave the house and get around. Emma currently uses the Kimba Medical Stroller, besides which being very heavy, does not fit into a regular, non-modified vehicle. Emma has two extremely devoted parents. My brother Heath works full time as a restaurant manager 50 plus hours a week. His schedule is erratic and changes weekly, therefore he is not available as often as he would like, to help with his daughter. My sister-in-law Katherine left her job to stay home to care for Emma. With the addition of Emma's brother and sister, Jake and Abby, their family was forced to travel in two cars, as there was not enough room for Emma, her parents, her nurse, her siblings, her medical stroller, and the life-sustaining equipment that she needs at all times. It is extremely difficult getting her to frequent doctors appointments and family functions. They bought a 2002 Ford Ecoline full-sized van with a raised roof, as they were unable to afford the cost of purchasing a brand new van to be modified at this time. Emma is currently enrolled in the NYS Care At Home Medicaid Waiver Program, which does offer a once-in-a-lifetime vehicle modification benefit, but the Nelson's do not want to use this opportunity on an older vehicle that won't last. I am trying to raise enough money so that Heath and Katherine can purchase a safe, new van with a 4-point retractable securement system installed, which would secure Emma's Medical stroller inside the van making it safe for her and her equipment to be transported. Their family can then have this van modified with the necessary lift provided by the state. They are currently unable to travel without Heath because she needs to be taken out of her chair and quickly, because she has had a tracheostomy to help her to breath, which requires tubes and wires to be disconnected for her to be carried and lifted into the van, and at five years old, she has gotten too big for Katherine to transport her herself. This van will allow Emma to travel with her family, without the restrictions they currently face. Please feel free to pass this along to anyone you think may be interested in this cause. Even $1.00 gets us closer to helping. If you couldn't tell, I'm on a mission...' *Please visit our Facebook page at
