My name is Wendell Marler and I am the Founder & President of Fishing With Heroes. As a lot of you I shake the hand and say Thank You to every Soldier I see & just always wanted to do more. After a lot of encouragement from some great Friends & Family Fishing With Heroes was born.
We are a Non Profit that takes Active Duty & Retired Soldiers and First Responders fishing. From first timers to avid anglers. No gear, No license, No boat needed, we provide it all, we even throw some ribs or a brisket on the smoker to provide a great lunch, heck we’ll even cook up some of their catch if they want, if not we clean the Fish then vacuum bag seal them to take home. From our great lakes & rivers here in the Northwest to once in a lifetime fishing trips.
When I first started this a little over a year ago I was looking at it as a way to say Thank You to these HEROES but after this year it’s become something more, something that is really needed. It is being referred to as Recreational Therapy by Psychologists. To give these HEROES a day on the water where they can just turn their minds off and not have to worry about anything except enjoying the day means more to these Heroes than you will ever know.
After hearing what these Heroes have gone and are going through to protect our freedom really has shown me how important this Recreational Therapy has become & the fact that I can help with this just makes me one proud American. It’s not just our Veterans, the daily stress of being an Active Duty Soldier, Police Officer or Fire Fighter is just something I cannot put into words and providing a day on the water with no worries is a very big deal to these HEROES.
At this time I am able to take 8-12 Heroes a month out on our little private lake but with a your help maybe we can take 8-12 a week instead. We also want to fund guided day trips to some of our great Lakes & Rivers we have in the Pacific Northwest. I also want to be able to fund 12 once in a lifetime fishing trips per year to places like The Kenai River in Alaska for those world class King Salmon or Southern Florida to Fly Fish for world class Tarpon or even some of that great Ice Fishing in Minnesota. The kind of trip that they will never never forget.
My long term goal for this Charity is to have a Fishing With Heroes Chapter in every city that has a Military Base. This has been a dream of mine for a long time.
