What
Simply put, this crowdfunding campaign will enable me to purchase a Camera - a FujiFilm GFX50s and a couple of lenses. But the reason I am asking for a community to contribute towards its purchase is the interesting part.
Why
Yes, I have a camera, two, in fact. (And you can have the first one, if you help me here...see details at the bottom of this post)
So why would I need a third, much more expensive camera? It's to take my art, my passion, and my career to the next level.
I can certainly do what I am doing now with the gear I own, but for what I have in mind going forward, I need the support and confidence of my community - to make the dream come alive.
It's not just the money that I am asking for (for the contributions will be paid back, hopefully, multifold in the coming months), but more importantly the vote of confidence in my ability to provide a service and an experience that you probably haven't had and are unlikely to have without me (and this camera) by your side.
When & Where (Yes, Internationally)
I expect to buy this medium format camera in the coming months and use it, frankly, wherever my backers desire me to. If you can't come to me, or prefer for me to come to you - I will. But why will I be coming to you? To take a portrait of you or your loved one(s), as my humble thanks for helping put a tool in my hands that I can create something beautiful with. Essentially, you'll be paying upfront for a photo session, but not just any photo session.
How
Most of you have been following my journey as a self- taught photographer for the past 2 years. With the help of some of my very talented and generous friends, I have learned (and am still constantly learning) how to create beautiful, impactful, meaningful images. But what I have struggled with is access. Access to you, the people who have enjoyed my work virtually. You haven't thought of asking me to create a portrait of you...either for an embarrassment of seeming narcissistic, just not having the physical proximity, or perhaps the thought never crossed your mind because you have photos of you already, maybe even some good ones. But what I would like to do here is something different. I'd like you to offer me the opportunity to get to know you and to prove to you that I may see you as maybe no one with a camera has ever seen you before.
This is my goal, this is my promise to keep, and it shall be my mission until I have achieved it.
The Idea
...is simple. I want you to help me get this camera, and my first order of business with it will be to come and create images of you like you have never seen before. It's not a promise that I am the best photographer, nor is it a claim that I am doing something no one else can. It is simply two promises. First, that I accept and am honored to come and see and talk to you for as long as it takes to get to know you well enough to create something just for you. Second, it is a promise that I will give you an experience and yes a few photos, that will mean something more.
If this seems like a bold claim, let me assure you, I am aware of the huge responsibility I am undertaking in making such promises. But I am doing what I love, and I am filtering here and now who I will spend my time with - in all cases it will be people who first gave me their confidence, support, love, and money to try this experiment in visual storytelling. For the love of art, for the love of encouraging artists, or to see if I'm solely an extremely gifted B.S. artist (but not a real one)...it's worth a few bucks I'd say.
Finally, my mission for 2017 is to do something bold, and I want to take you on part of this journey with me. So in the end, the worst case is, you will have paid for overpromised photos and my undying gratitude
for your confidence in me. Best case, you will have paid for some nice photos and my undying gratitude for your confidence in me and you'll have a heck of a story to tell.
Details of the funding usage:
1. Camera body: $6500 (systems such as this usually cost from $6500 to upwards of $25,000) - I am buying the newest/cheapest version to keep this goal reachable.
2. Two Lenses: $4,200 (only these specialized lenses will work on this camera - no cheaper options available)
3. Crowdfunding fees and commissions etc.
I don't know if this helps: but here are some general suggestions on donations:
$2000 or more = I'm your slave and we can aim for photos on your schedule wherever, whenever, of whomever (2a.m. photoshoot in the dessert is certainly an option) - I doubt if anyone is going to sign up for this anyway. I will photograph until your jaw drops seeing the results... no time limit. 3 large print(s) included.
$1000: One large print, digital copies of edited photos, my undying gratitude, and some very nice dinners, maybe even a hand cooked meal by moi.
$500: At least better than your average studio shots, until you are satisfied...and I don't expect you to be satisfied easily.
$100: I deeply appreciate your support, and eventually, I will take photos of you too (because this campaign is more about me reconnecting with my friends and supporters through my lens).
PLUS: for anything upwards of $50 you will be entered into a draw to win my Fuji XT-10 Silver - yes, it's what got me so far, so I'd love to give you the $800 camera ;) to start you on your own journey.
<$1, 10, 20, 50... Anything you would like to contribute to my humble project is much appreciated. Thank you for your confidence in me and for sharing this campaign on your facebook. Feel free to ask for a high-resolution digital copy of any of my photos out there.
