Birthday Books for Kids

Donation protected

I am the principal at middle school where approximately 94% of the
students are categorized as economically disadvantaged and 41% of
the students are reading below grade level based, as measured by the
State of California.

Our school works hard to promote literacy and motivate students to
practice their reading skills outside of school.  We have a wide array of
readers, ranging from those at a 1st grade level - all the way to the 12th grade level.  Of course we have a well stocked school library, and our local city has a wonderful public library.

That being said, there is nothing like owning your own books.  Having
books at home helps build a life long of reading.  With the majority of
our students being from low-income families ($2,252 or less for a
family of 2) and living expenses on the rise, purchasing books is a luxury most of our families cannot afford.  Many students have shared they
have never purchased a book.

My goal is to raise $2300 to start a Birthday Book Library for the
students at my school.  We would gift a book to each student at the
school on their birthday. There are 431 students at our middle school.

A donation of $5 can fund 1 new  book and donation of $20
approximately 4 new books.

Most of you reading this have purchased books for children, friends,
and family.  You know the joys of reading.  I hope you can find the
generosity to buy a book for deserving students.
