The National History Day competition brings talented and enthusiastic kids to the Washington, DC area each year from across the United States and its territories to showcase their projects on history. This year the history club in South Haven, Michigan is proud to have two national finalists, Avery and Jessee, who will represent the state of Michigan in the documentary category.
Avery and Jessee have worked very hard on their documentary about the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). You may have seen news about the WASP because there is currently legislation pending before Congress to grant them rights to be in Arlington National Cemetery. That is why Avery and Jessee's project is so timely. Their project on the WASP of WWII highlights the importance of remembering history and passing this knowledge onto the next generation.
The students and their families are self-funded throughout the process which involves traveling within the state of Michigan throughout the school year to the different levels of competition and paying for a trip to the Washington, DC area to compete in the national finals, which lasts 4 days. South Haven's history club has sent students to the National Finals for the past 6 years and want to continue their winning traditions and help students with the costs.
In order to defray the costs for the families to support these talented students, we are fundraising for the history club of South Haven Michigan. The money will assist Avery and Jessee's families and teacher with travel, registration and participation expenses associated with the week-long competition in the Washington, DC area.
Doing well in this competition is a huge honor and achievement for the students, but we want to make sure that it is not a financial hurdle.
