My name is Denisha Durant. I’m 27 years old and the mother of two amazing children, a 9 year old daughter and an 11 year old son. I had my son when I was 16 years old and my daughter three days after turning 18. For years I raised my children as a single mother. I left my family and ran from their abusive father, moving from Puerto Rico to Florida in hopes of providing better opportunities and a better life for my children. I sacrificed everything to be the best mother for my children. I work hard to give my kids everything they need, and do everything to raise them the right way. Everything that my children have had has come from me. I never asked their father for child support. He was an abuser and I am just happy to be away from him. I believe if his heart doesn’t tell him to care and provide for his kids why force him.
About 5 years ago the most amazing man came into our lives. He is caring, loving, and supportive, but the most important thing is that he loves my kids. After I had my daughter, my grandmother decided that I should have a tubal ligation to ensure that I could not have any more children. I don’t blame her as it was probably the best decision at the time. I was too young to make good choices, and she was caring for all of us. I was not considered an adult, so she made the decision and consented for me. At the time I really believed she was making the best decision, but nine years later I find myself married to the best man in the world and wanting to have another child.
We consulted Dr. Tarantino at the Tampa Reproductive Medicine Group about the possibility of a tubal reversal. I explained my situation to him and that I was unsure what procedure I had undergone nine years ago. He proceeded with a laparoscopy to determine if I still had tubes, and whether the previous procedure could be reversed. He told us that he would do the laparoscopy and the reversal at the same time, this didn’t make sense to us initially as we thought he would check first then we’d come back if the reversal was an option, but he told us that would be more expensive. We worked hard and sacrificed a lot to save up the $5755 to pay for this procedure. Our hopes were high that everything would turn out well when we returned on Feb. 25, 2015.
When I was awakened by the nurse after surgery I opened my eyes and asked the nurse if I had tubes, she responded with “No.” My heart felt like someone had torn it into a thousand pieces. I thought that this had to be a dream, so I pushed myself to wake up and asked her again and she gave me the same response. I immediately asked to see my husband and when he walked in I could see the hurt and disappointment in his eyes and I knew then that it was true.
We were told that our only remaining option was IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), but the cost is much higher. We don’t want to give up, so my husband called a different clinic and scheduled a consultation and found that the price for IVF is around $15,000. The Reproductive Center will only refund $2500 of the $5755, basically charging us $3255 for a procedure that costs $700. We feel that they have basically stolen our money, but we don’t know how to fight them.
I’m here now asking for your help. Please help me become a mother again. I love my two children like nothing else on earth but I so want to be able to have another child with my husband.
