THE DREAM
Ever since I was a kid, I've dreamed of one day walking into a bookstore and seeing someone read a book that I wrote.

THE HARD TRUTH
There are more good stories to be read than will ever be published. The typical rejection rate for a manuscript at any given publication is around 90%, regardless of how well a story is written or how fascinating a plot. One formatting error, and a manuscript is taken from the "slush pile" and thrown into the rejection pile. And even if a manuscript is picked up, there is a good chance it will never see a bookshelf due to over-saturation. There can only be so many featured books in a bookstore.

WHY A PUBLISHING COMPANY?
I've tried my hand at the slush pile. I've waited the three-to-six-months just to be told my manuscript had not been accepted. And I completely understand, with no hard feelings. But I want better odds and faster times than 10% and six months.

WHAT ABOUT SELF-PUBLISHING?
The problem is that self-publishing can often carry with it a whole slew of unprofessional connotations (some true, some false). If only there was an option in-between...

THE SOLUTION!
Why not start my own publication? I've concluded my best course of action would be to start a publishing company here in San Luis Obispo, California. With a publishing company, I will be able to professionally publish my own work as well as be able to publish other writers down the road. One more publication means one more opportunity for writers and one more story for readers.

THE BUSINESS PLAN:

1.) Set up a publishing company.

2.) Begin publishing my own work as eBooks on Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, Apple iBooks, Kobo, etc.

3.) Get involved with the local writing community in San Luis Obispo county, and, in time, host author events.

4.) Host a "Featured Author" page on the publication website and post guest-author interviews.

5.) Offer self-publishing author services and in-house publishing opportunities.

6.) Hold short-story contests with possible cash prizes and options for publication.

7.) Launch an annual short-story anthology in both eBook and print editions.

8.) Begin offering long-form work in print, distributing to online bookstores like Amazon and in-store ordering through Barnes & Noble.

9.) If things begin to take off, hire interns or employees to take care of the business end of things so I can continue to focus on my real passion--writing more stories!

MAIN ASSOCIATED COSTS
Starting a business is costly. To see some of the specific large ticket items needed to start a publishing company, please view the Wishlist below (you can pick an item and donate the full amount, or even just contribute a portion toward it). On my own, this could take years. But with your help, I'm confident we can make it happen in a month!

If you'd be willing to pitch in (even if it's just a dollar or two!), you'd be helping me take the next step necessary toward accomplishing my dream.

Thank you so much for your support!
